Trying self tan for the first time can feel intimidating — but it doesn’t need to be.
A natural, streak-free glow comes down to a simple routine and the right technique. Once you understand how to apply it properly, it becomes quick, easy, and completely stress-free.
Here’s exactly how to do it.
Start with clean, dry, prepped skin.
Your skin should already be exfoliated (ideally the day before), free from deodorant, perfume, and body products. This gives your tan a clean base to develop evenly.
When applying your tan, work in sections.
Start with your legs, then move to your arms, and finish with your torso. This helps you stay organised and avoid missing areas.
Use less product than you think you need.
This is one of the biggest mistakes beginners make. It’s always better to start light and build your colour gradually rather than applying too much at once.
Apply using long, circular motions.
Smooth, even strokes help distribute the product more evenly across your skin.
Don’t overload dry areas.
Your elbows, knees, hands, and feet naturally absorb more product, which can make them appear darker. Use only the leftover tan on your mitt for these areas , and use you blending brush to blend these areas — never apply fresh product directly.
Take your time blending.
Lightly go over each section to make sure there are no harsh lines or uneven patches before moving on. Use your blending brush as needed.
Once applied, let your tan dry properly.
Give it a few minutes before getting dressed. If your skin still feels tacky, it’s not ready yet.
Wear loose, dark clothing after application.
Tight clothing can rub against your skin and affect how your tan develops. Loose fabrics help keep everything in place while your tan sets.
Avoid water and sweating while your tan develops.
Let your tan fully develop before showering, and avoid anything that could cause sweating, as this can lead to streaks.
