Why Your Self Tan Goes Patchy (And How to Fix It)
Share
Patchy self tan is one of the most common problems, and it usually comes down to two things: uneven skin prep and the product itself.
Even the best routine can’t completely fix a formula that streaks, dries too fast, or doesn’t develop evenly.
Choosing a high-quality self tan is just as important as prepping your skin.
One of the main causes of patchy tan is dry or uneven skin. Areas like elbows, knees, ankles, and hands naturally absorb more product, which can create darker spots if not prepped properly. Exfoliating before applying your tan evens out the skin and helps the colour develop smoothly. Skipping this step is the fastest way to end up with streaks and blotches.
Another common cause is applying too much product in certain areas. It’s easy to overload your mitt or hands, which can leave some parts darker than others. The trick is to start light and build gradually. If you notice lighter patches forming, you can mix a little moisturiser with your remaining tan and apply it to those areas. This blends the colour and smooths out inconsistencies.
If some spots turn out darker than the rest, don’t panic. Use a damp cloth to gently buff these areas in circular motions. This removes excess product without affecting the overall tan too much. Focus on spots like elbows and knees, which tend to hold more colour.
Other factors that can cause patchiness include rubbing your skin too much while drying, sweating before the tan has developed, or wearing tight clothing immediately after application. Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing, allow your tan to set before dressing, and avoid heat or friction in the first few hours.
Patchy tan is almost always preventable, but the right product makes it so much easier. Proper prep, light even application, and a quality self tan will keep your glow looking smooth and natural every time.
Once you get the hang of these techniques and choose the right formula, maintaining a streak-free tan becomes simple and stress-free.
